Rock Crystal

Origin: Brazil

Care instructions

Clean with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately. Avoid acidic cleaners, abrasive materials, harsh chemicals and prolonged contact with liquids. Natural variation, inclusions, and tonal change are part of the material character.
Rock crystal is the pure, transparent variety of quartz and one of the most recognizable minerals found in nature. Our Rock Crystal comes from Brazil, a country with significant natural quartz deposits. Composed of silicon dioxide, the crystal ranges from exceptionally clear areas to sections with natural veils, fractures and mineral inclusions.

Brazilian Rock Crystal occurs within ancient geological formations dating from approximately 480 million to 1.9 billion years ago. It forms when silica-rich fluids crystallize within cavities and fractures in rock. Over immense periods of time, quartz develops its characteristic crystal structure. Changes in temperature, pressure and surrounding minerals can leave visible traces inside the crystal, creating inclusions, internal structures and variations in clarity.

Beyond its use as a decorative stone, quartz possesses a remarkable physical property known as piezoelectricity. When mechanical pressure is applied to quartz, it can generate an electrical charge. When electrical voltage is applied, the crystal responds with a precise mechanical movement. This ability allows quartz to oscillate at a highly stable frequency and made it fundamental to precision timekeeping. Quartz crystals continue to regulate time in watches, clocks and countless electronic devices today.

Rock crystal has fascinated people for far longer than its technological applications. Its name traces back to the ancient Greek word "krystallos", meaning ice. Clear quartz was once believed to be water that had frozen so deeply it could never melt. Science has long since replaced this ancient explanation, but the exceptional clarity that inspired the name remains one of Rock Crystal’s defining characteristics.
